Danu is the oldest Celtic Goddess, also known as Don and Anu. Her influence has spread far across the British Isles and Europe. Danu is the power that is in the land, never to be overcome by mortals. Her power lies in the imagination of those who see magic in the twilight mists between worlds.
Danu is a goddess of fertility and plenty, as mother of the Fairies she is close to the land and the waters. Her name has been used for many rivers, the Danube for example.
Whilst Danu is known as the Mother of the Celtic Gods, her presence is also noted in Hindu mythology, as the goddess of the primordial waters of creation.
In all cultures that she appears in Danu is viewed as the Goddess of birth and beginnings, of generation and fertility. Danu is the prime mover. She who came before everything else. As an aspect of the Great Mother she encompasses both light and dark, both giving and receiving back. She is enfolding darkness and brilliant flashes of light. She is the coldness of the stones in the river and the warmth of the sun. She is every colour, every smell, every texture at one time. She is distant and she is close. She is young and she is old. She shifts like the currents of the river.
